Belmont Basketball Gym being named after Mr. Malcolm Kuykendall
Tishomingo County School District will be honoring Mr. Malcolm Kuykendall at half time of the Belmont Girls' Home Basketball Game on November 16, 2012 by officially naming the Belmont Gymnasium as the Malcolm Kuykendall Gymnasium.
Mr. Kuykendall was a coach for 25 years and had teams playing in the state tournament 15 of those years. He had 12 teams play for the State Championship, winning eight of them. He was selected "Coach of the Year" eight times, and four on the state level. He was also selected to the Mississippi Coaches "Hall of Fame", Delta State University Coaches " Hall of Fame", Northeast Mississippi basketball Coaches 1st class "Hall of Fame", and NEMCC "Hall of Fame".
Mr. Kuykendall completed 42 years in education by serving as Assistant Principal and Principal for 11 years, in which the school received the highest state and federal accreditation rating possible, and he was selected as the District "Principal of the Year". He was also selected as the Mississippi "Superintendent of the Year" for 2012.
He served as Superintendent of Tishomingo County School District for six years. During his service the district completed several building projects, while experiencing the deep recession that caused major budget cuts. The district was able to maintain a healthy reserve balance and did not have to lay off employees like most districts.
Academics also remained in the top in the country. One example of the district's academic success is the seniors of 2012 in our district had a 84.5% graduation rate, drop out rate 4.5%, and completion rate of 94.7.
The district would like to invite the public to the recognition ceremony to be held at half time of the Belmont Girls' Basketball Game on Friday November 16, 2012.

February 14, 2012 - Tishomingo County School District Announces Retirement
After serving 42 years as an educator, Malcolm Kuykendall, Superintendent of Tishomingo County
Special Municipal Separate School District, has announced his retirement effective June 30, 2012.
Superintendent Kuykendall is currently the 2012 Mississippi Superintendent of the Year. He has
served as Superintendent for the previous six years. During his tenure as superintendent,
Tishomingo County School District has ranked as one of the top academic districts in the state.
When asked about Mr. Kuykendall's Retirement Announcement, Board President Michael Puckett stated,
"Mr. Kuykendall has poured his heart into his responsibilities as Superintendent. Our school district
has achieved great things under his leadership. We are academically one of the top districts in
Mississippi and we are financially sound for the future."
Under the new rigor required by the state over the last four years, Tishomingo County School District's
QDI, growth, graduation rate, drop-out rate, academic scholarships, etc. have ranked among the very top.
The district has had multiple building projects that Superintendent Kuykendall has led the district through.
Although the nation is experiencing the greatest recession since the Great Depression, Superintendent
Kuykendall has managed the finances so that there have been little or no layoffs. The district is
operating on a safe financial structure.
Superintendent Kuykendall also served as a principal and assistant principal eleven years at Belmont
School prior to becoming superintendent. He had been selected as Tishomingo County School District
Principal of the Year. He also served as Mississippi State Coordinator for six of those years.
Kuykendall also coached high school basketball for 25 years. Twelve of those years his teams played

selected as the 2012 Mississippi Superintendent of the Year. Mr.
Kuykendall will represent Mississippi on the national level for the
honor of being chosen as the American Association of School
Administrators 2012 Superintendent of the Year. What makes Mr.
Kuykendall different from the rest is that he really believes in his
convictions and will give up at nothing to make sure his goals for his
students and his community are achieved. He has devoted himself to the
field of education with experience as a bus driver, teacher, coach,
assistant principal, principal and superintendent. His dedication,

Mr. Kuykendall holds a bachelor of science degree in education from
Delta State University, a master of education from the University of
Mississippi.
During Mr. Kuykendallís tenure as superintendent, his tireless efforts
and data driven decisions in curriculum and instruction has afforded
the Tishomingo County Separate Municipal School District improvements
and student achievement successes. The district instituted extensive
professional development programs addressing subjects that are state

the students and employees of the school district are provided the
necessary tools to be successful.
Under Mr. Kuykendallís leadership, the Tishomingo County School
District has instituted innovative ways to educate all children. He is
not afraid to ask the hard questions, tackle the unchallenged issue,

productive educational system.
Because Mr. Kuykendall values effective teaching, he has instituted
progressive methods for teaching in all grade levels.
A School Board Member wrote that Mr. Kuykendall stands out as one of

We have received our accountability results for the 2010-2011 school year. Tishomingo County High School and Belmont K-12 have been recognized as "STAR SCHOOLS." This is the highest achievement a school can receive in the state of Mississippi. Tishomingo School, Iuka Elementary School, and Iuka Middle School are "HIGH PERFORMING SCHOOLS." Burnsville School is a "SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL." Burnsville lacked only two points from being a "HIGH PERFORMING SCHOOL." Star Schools are the best in America, High Performing Schools are among the best in America, and Successful Schools are average schools in America. The accountability formula has four levels below Successful, but no school in the Tishomingo County School District was in one of the bottom four levels.
We will have a Star Celebration on October 3, 2011, for TCHS at 8:30 a.m. and for Belmont, starting at 1:00 p.m. We invite our communities to come to each campus and help us celebrate the great achievements of our students.
I believe this time next year, we will have Star celebrations planned at all campuses in our school district. We are adding many interactive boards to the tested area teacher's classrooms. We are adding EZ Assessments so each teacher will know where his/her students are deficient. We have the best teachers in America, but we are trying to add essential tools in this technology age to make them even better.

I appreciate your patience today with the delayed start. Please be informed of the guidelines that we must follow from the Mississippi Department of Education. Since we are accredited as a District, we are required by MDE policy to make decisions such as delayed starts, cancellations, and make-up times as a District and not by individual schools. There are so many things in the District that are intertwined that is virtually impossible to delay or cancel at only one campus. There are many times that the roads are icy only on the northern most boarder of the county or only at the southern end of the county, but school is always called off county-wide. The same rule must apply when there is a non-weather related problem. If there is one school in the District that cannot operate, then all schools in the District must be delayed or cancelled for the day. Again, I appreciate your patience and hope that you will pass this information on so that the public will understand the guidelines that we must follow when these decisions must be made. Have a great week!

I hope the summer break gave everyone the time to relax and to enjoy some good recreation. Our three days of professional development seem to have been a profitable time in perparing everyone to start the school year. Our students are now back after the break, and we hope each is refreshed and ready to start this important school year.
We have received much of the test data from last year. We do not know for sure, but it appears to us with the data we have at this time, that we will have 2 STAR SCHOOLS, 3 and possibly 4 HIGH PERFORMING SCHOOLS. Remember the research shows that STAR and HIGH PERFORMING SCHOOLS are among the BEST in America. I feel very confident that ALL our schools will be STAR SCHOOLS NEXT YEAR. The EZ Assessment we have purchased for teachers to use with their students three times during the school year will let each teacher know exactly how well his/her students are progressing on the MCTC2/SATP2; therefore, the extra information will allow each teacher to focus in the areas his/her students are deficient. I encourage each employee to begin the 1st day of school preparing his/her students for the assessment that is coming.
We are very fortunate to have the best teachers and students in America. When we combine that with our great parents and communities, that makes Tishomingo County the greatest place in the world to live.

This school year has been one for the books. We have seen record amounts of ice and snow. Also, we have seen the most and worst tornadoes in decades. I appreciate your help and support as we worked through the delays and cancellations. I appreciate all that you have done for our children this school year.
I hope each of you have a wonderful summer. The time of rest, relaxation, and recreation will be good for each of you.

“ I love to see students succeed and I believe Tishomingo has a
great school and a great community,” Mr. Roberts said. “I feel
fortunate to have a great faculty and staff who are dedicated to
the students at Tishomingo Elementary. I'm also proud to be in a

I hope everyone's holidays were very enjoyable. A refreshing break should be profitable to our students, teachers, administrators, and staff.
All the comments that I have heard about the Staff Development on January 3, 2011, have been positive. We have tried to equip the teachers with the necessary tools by making teacher-pupil ratios low and by providing teachers with consultants who have studied the curriculum and the tests which should make them a great help to the teachers preparing our students for the accessments in April and May. The students' success depennds on having great teachers to motivate, encourage, and prepare them for the future. We are fortunate to have teachers, administrators, and staff who can fullfill this role. Our schools will be judged on how well our students perform on the SATP in April and the MCT2 in May. We have almost a semester to prepare our students. I would like to encourage everyone to take advantage of every day, every hour, and every minute left to show each community just how great each of our schools are in Tishomingo County.

This school year is passing very quickly, and it is hard to believe that Christmas is upon us. I appreciate how hard everyone has worked with our children this school year. We have been working on professional development for January 3, 2011. We are going to give Dr. Britton and the janitoral staff at TCHS a break and meet in the auditorium at Belmont. There are countless hours required to prepare the building/buildings for a full day of professional development and countless hours to clean up after the meeting. We have Enterprise School District coming in the morning to share with us how they improved their test scores to become one of three Star School Districts in Mississippi. The afternoon I hope will be very helpful with teachers sharing what has worked for them in their classrooms. We have an administrator in charge of all break out sessions. Each of them have known for some time which area he/she is in charge; therefore, I believe the afternoon will be very profitable for all. We are so blessed in Tishomingo County to have such great schools.
I want to say again how much I appreciate our great teachers, students, administrators, parents, and communities.
I hope each of you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Staff,I asked the high school counselors, Mrs. Ward at TCHS and Mrs. Bonds at Belmont, to give me the number of academic scholarships our seniors received in May 2010. Each high school had about 74% of the senior class to receive some type of academic scholarship. These scholarships were based on GPA or ACT. This percentage reflects the colleges' perception of Tishomingo County's students' preparedness for college. This is just another example of what great teachers, staff, and administrators we have in Tishomingo County Schools.
Thank each of you for what you do for our children everyday. Those who say public education does not work apparently never have driven through Tishomingo County!

I want to congratulate each of your for making this a very successful school year. We are so blessed in Tishomingo County. We have the greatest staff possible and we have great parents and students. I am very grateful to each of your for all of your hard work. I feel certain that each school will be accredited a star/high performing school when our results become public. If my feelings comes true, it will be because of your hard work. Everyone realizes teaching is much more stressful today than ever before. We are much more accountable today with the pressure of high-stakes testing, the graduation rate, the dropout rate, etc. The deep recession that we find ourselves in today makes everyone's job more difficult.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable spring break. I know many of you are looking forward to Good Friday.
I am sure the mock MCT2 assessment was a great measuring stick. I encourage ALL employees to prepare our students for the SATP and MCT2. When the results come back in the summer, each community will want its school to be a Star School or a High Performing school. Remember Star Schools and High Performing Schools are among the best schools in America. How we manage the remaining days is very important to achieving maximum results. The SATP in April and the MCT2 in May allow us the opportunity to show each community that our students are the best prepared in America.

I hope each of you had an opportunity to watch on TV or read in the paper Mississippi's high grade on our new accountability system. Mississippi earned a grade of "B+". Our state has usually earned a grade of "D-" and never anything higher than a "D+". The "B+" is great news.
We all know that schools who are Star Schools or High Performing Schools are among the best schools in America. The Science tests will be administered in March, SATP in April, and the MCT2 in May. This gives each school an opportunity to show communities that our students are the best prepared in America.

I hope everyone has had a great school year up to this point. As we all understand with the new legislation in recent years, schools can not remain the same. The reason schools must change: new test with greater rigor, the new accountability standards, and consequences for poor test scores (Senate bill 2149 & Children First Act). The new requirements that demanded schools to change creates great STRESS for all of us. I appreciate what each of you do everyday for our children.
We have Thanksgiving holidays coming up soon. I encourage each of you to relax and have an enjoyable time with family. Also, if you like to hunt, fish, shop, golf, read, travel, cook, watch football, basketball, soccer, or whatever, use this time to relieve stress and just enjoy life.

We hope everyone has had a successful start to our new school year.
There is a lot of anticipation concerning the new accreditation model.
Each school should know its accreditation level in October. The model
demands high scale scores as well as growth. We hope each
of our schools will receive the highest ranking of the accreditation
model. However, if any school does not have the highest ranking, I hope
each teacher will take advantage of each day to have our children
prepared for the April and May tests. If all of our students score high
this spring, next October all of our schools will have the highest
ranking possible. I have great confidence that next year will be greater
than this year. The reason I believe we will improve is because we have
the greatest students, parents, administrators and teachers in America.

The district has received the 5th grade and 8th grade science scores.
We are very proud of our 5th/8th grade science scores. Our 5th grade and 8th grade scores were 11 points above the state average. The average score for each school in the district in the 5th as well as the 8th grade was proficient.
This is another example of what great teachers, students, administrators, and parents we have in Tishomingo County.

We have received our English II writing scores, and the TCSD had a 100% passing rate. Also, we have received our Vocational test scores, and we had two groups to score #1 in the state, another group scored #2 in the state, and all groups scored in the top in the state. These results prove what great students, teachers, administrators, and parents we have in Tishomingo County.
